tricks of the trade

i've been prepping a new batch of tin soldiers for the last couple of days. it dawned on me that i have definitely learned a thing or two that makes me better at painting/modelling than i used to be. tricks of the trade if you will. in that moment i realized that i should share some of my knowledge with others. so, enjoy!

before i begin i think i should mention that i came across these tidbits in many ways. some i taught myself, some were taught to me, and others i just saw and repeated.

sticking things together - three words: five minute epoxy. Xevious told me about this stuff. it's a little harder to work with but holds so much better than superglue. its great for larger metal models.  things that get bumped and normally would break off and have to be reglued just dont ever break. its a two part glue that needs to be mixed together and i have learned to mix it in small batches. if you try to glue too many different things the glue will start to harden and become no good to work with. also, this stuff does take 5 minutes to hold something in place, so its usually best just to glue one thing at a time to make sure it doesnt go anywhere while it sets. i got mine at the dollar store and it works great.Photobucket

there are other times when i want a really good hold on something but its just too tricky to use the 5 minute epoxy. these are usually things like small based models arms or weapons, things that will stick out and probably get bumped and broken. for these i use a small amount of green stuff and superglue. i put a little bit of glue on both surfaces getting stuck together and put a tiny ball of greenstuff in the middle. this works really well, but if you use too much greenstuff it will squish out the middle.

rubbing off paint- you know when youre painting a model and you end off rubbing paint off with your fingers? or you are trying to paint something at a funny angle and rub paint off with your table? i dont do that anymore. i started using the  sponge pad that comes with a model in a blister pack. i mostly use it to lie my model on while im painting it and that way i can hold it by the base at whatever angle i want and never rub anything off. to me this seems so rudimentary. i feel as though that must be the obvious purpose to putting the sponge in the pack at all and everyone must do this already. so maybe i dont need to point it out, but no one pointed it out to me... so there you go.Photobucket

magnets - man these things are useful! i think that it is very widely known that magnets are a great way to give you options for your models. mr. model has two options for guns? why not slap magnets on his hands and both guns and have the option to swap them out on a whim?
Xevious and i have been using them for another purpose: transportation. stick a magnet under the base of your models, put them in a cookie tin, and you have a great way to haul them around without worrying about breaking or scraping the paint off them. Photobucket Photobucket
my technique goes like this: cut the blister pack up into little squares. mix up your 5 minute epoxy. layer the glue and plastic to a height that the magnet will be flush with the rim of the base when you stick it on. stick the magnet on with epoxy as well. perfecto.

i personally have started doing this before i even stick my models to their bases. this way you dont have to come up with some weird balancing act to make sure the magnet doesnt move before the glue sets. Xevious has told me he doesnt like to do it this way because the magnets mess up will mess up the sand he puts on his bases. i guess there must be iron in his sand, but i dont have any problems.

i guess that will be all for now. i know no one likes reading blog a entry with no pictures, so i'll snap a couple pics and let this update rip.

enjoy.

follow up

so,

i played a couple games today at a  friends place. two 15 point matchups against khador, the second of which was conceded pretty quickly when Siege and Co. set up shop and started blasting everything away. here is a picture of the end of the first game when the defender landed his hammer into sorcha to do that final point of damage. it ended up being a little too close for comfort, but it worked out.

i also managed to get a little bit of work done on my 'jack workshop. mostly just some shaping and patterning. i hollowed out the top of it too. i think its going to look pretty cool. i may put a little bit of paint on the chimney next or start working on the rest of the building. time will tell.

if you click them, they will grow.

good news: nearly finished the knights
bad news: wifey took the camera (ie: no pictures of the steps.)
bad knews: one of my horses broke a leg
good news: i ficksed it.
bad news: his arm broke
good news: fixed that too.
bad news: there is still much to do
good news: i'll get around to it.

heres some pictures.

the sword knights still need some highlights and their spare swords, and the storm lance will need plenty of touching up. the leg that was broken needs to get de-uglied, and i managed to rub some paint off in spots during the repair process.

i used the sword knights the other knight in their current state, and was relatively happy with them. i have vowed to myself (and them) that i will learn the right spot for them in my force and make them a force to be reckoned with.

i tried to fish the horse with 5-min epoxy alone but that didnt work. i tried to fix him by drilling a bit and filling it with super glue and green stuff but that didnt work. finally i drilled deeper (in the TINY horses leg) and filled it with a rod and epoxy, which worked. in the end fixing him ended up being a pain in the ass and i lost the ambition to make a joke about horses with broken legs and glue factories. oh well, im sure you can figure something out.

until next time,

viva las vegas! errr.... HAPPY GAMING!

Making a spam and colgate sandwich:

As i have returned from my Eurotrip, I have found myself with motivation to get things painted, and have been quite content with my progress. I have a small contingent of models that are lined up for the dip and they are getting it at a decent pace. tonight i squeaked in 30 minutes before i had to come to work my night shift. Every little bit counts. i'm actually trying out a little bit of a new technique (new to me anyways), but im cataloging that for a future update.

Earlier I was strolling down the painting blog circuit and came across a blog I liked. (www.ironheadstation.com) there was a good article about keeping motivation. One idea that appears to be a fundamental is to make sure you keep switching things up. Things like not doing squads and squads of soldiers, but instead breaking it up. rewarding yourself for finishing up a whole squad by moving on to a completely different solo model. a warcaster, a 'jack, a solo, maybe even a model you just like from some other product line. There was one other suggestion in particular that piqued my interest, and that was to "Paint something for a friend’s army in their color scheme.". Which leads me to the POINT of this whole update: I propose Xevious and I swap a model and paint it for each other! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh!!

Good idea? Good idea. I think it will be a nice break from my normal paint scheme, and it will still be progress towards getting our armies painted.

Also, on a side note...apparently the same core concepts work for writing as well. (setting goals, making projects, mixing it up, and doing it often.) So I would like to try to reinvigorate this blog as well.

As always: HAPPY GAMING!

fresh blood.

look at the blood that was spilled when i played a 400 point battle vs pete! no, its not a zit. i bent down to check line of sight from my gun mage captain and i got speared by a pointy ass pine tree he was standing near! owww!!!

we managed to play out 2 400 point games and im starting to feel more comfortable with my warcasters, especially siege. i can understand some of his little tricks a little better and have managed to pull them out a couple times. doing this has made me understand a little bit more about stryker and how i could perhaps use him better.

i have a shit ton of painting to do. should i post more pics of stuff as a get it done? perhaps when i get some work done on my TOP SECRET and MYSTERIOUS models?
should i look to make a battle report/ game analysis post?

we have one subscriber, perhaps that gourmand has a preference? (this is a test, to see if youre reading! HA!)

i just ate 2 fantastic grilled cheeses

and during my little lunch break from painting im going to post some sweet info for those interested. (i told pete to check it)

new rules for warmachine. i think they are technically supposed to be going into effect in january (i think), however hordes mkii rules arent going to be ready at the same time..so who knows when/what is going to happen. for the time being the new rules are in pdf format and they are free. ill take it.

http://privateerpress.com/company/mkii-rules-and-model-info-available-for-pdf-download

forceplanner. ive tried a couple different programs that all seem to do the exact same thing. this one requires no download and is free.

just a little bit

i find that when i have a new model to paint, especially when its a model that i have had on my list of things to do for a while, that i am hesitant to start it. not because i dont want to, but because it can feel a little overwhelming. not as though im gonna have a panic attack, but that i feel like it is going to be so much work that i want to put it off.

this happened to me today and i just decided i would paint a little bit before i went to work. just a little...i painted the pants of one of my solos. chippin away at it you know? ill probably be putting finishing highlights on it before i know it!

also,

i put an advert on craigslist like a month ago in the wanted section saying that i wanted warmachine models, preferrably cygnar. lo' and behold i got a couple responses and ive picked up a bunch of stuff for wicked cheap. buddy bought this stuff that he never got around to painting/using and just wanted to get rid of it, and i raked it in for about 45-50% of retail price! its a deal, its a steal, its the sale fo the fucken century!

in other news,

i went to a games store that hosts game nights for all sorts of games, magic the gathering, warhammer, et cetera, and WARMACHINE AND HORDES! it was the warmachine game night and i saw a bunch of action. i did bring my battlegroup, but i didnt play any games. i was more interested in observing the play (seeing if ive been doing things right) and observing the players. although my crack team of scientists are still crunching the numbers, carrying the remainders and whatnot, im pretty sure that i will go back.

and then...

sweet pete and i also played a game together the other night and he seems to be pleased with the gameplay. so much so that he has buckled down and tackled the painting of his heavy 'jack, which he thinks will be completed in the next couple of days!

more updates to come!

here i am!

lets all welcome me, segrig, to the best destination for gaming!

i feel there are a couple of issues with that statement.
1) "lets all" -> this assumes anyone will ever read this other than Xevs and i.
2) when did we become the best?

as youve probably already surmised this blog and my first post are to be self fulfilling prophecies.

now just sit back and watch the magic happen.....

ps: im just here to meet chicks.

Here we go....

So my brother finally convinced me to get into a game that uses miniature models. He has been playing Warhammer for a while now and invited me over to play with him and a friend. I have to say it was a lot more fun than I anticipated...but I didn't feel like spending the hundreds upon hundreds of dollars it would take to build an army that would be competitive with the rest of them.

Flash forward a bit and he has discovered Warmachine. It is like Warhammer but has some different elements to it (which I will be discussing in other posts) however the nice thing for me is that none of us own any models yet. So the 3 of us decided to give it a go....

This is my first experience with building and painting these gaming models and so I thought it would be kinda neat to blog about it...at the same time we are always trying out new games etc so then I thought why don't I just create a general gaming blog and talk about all my gaming experiences.

So this will be be all about gaming....I will be discussing all aspects including new game reviews, strategies and experiences.

If nothing else I will enjoy documenting it and hopefully along the way someone will enjoy reading it.
